BOSTON -- State police were investigating a three-car crash on Route 202 in New Salem, Mass., over the weekend that claimed the life of a New Hampshire man.Troopers said Nicholas J. Cote, 21, of Keene, N.H., was operating a 2002 Mazda Protégé on Route 202 north when he lost control of his vehicle and traveled into the oncoming travel lane of Route 202 south.The Mazda collided head-on into a 2005 Toyota Tacoma that was traveling south on Route 202. It was operated by Ronald E. Berger, 53, of Shutesbury, police said.
As a result of that crash, a 1995 Mercury Sable traveling behind the Toyota collided into the rear of the Toyota. It operated by Peter J. Copa, 18, of Malden, Mass. It was unknown if Cote was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. He sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene.Berger was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was taken to Athol Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.Copa and his two passengers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and was uninjured in the crash.Troopers said it appeared speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, which remained under investigation.
