Other News: Hilton Adding Hotel; Venetian Adding Rooms
'Viva Las Vegas' Director Dies
Last week I reported about all of the proposed development headed toward the north end of the Las Vegas Strip, and now there's something new to add to the list.
A new Hilton hotel and casino is being proposed for Sahara Avenue, just west of the Strip. The plans, which were submitted to the Las Vegas Planning Commission, call for a 200-room Hilton Garden Inn and a 40,000-square foot casino adjacent.
If everything goes as planned, construction could begin before the end of this year, with a tentative opening set for spring of 2004.
The area, the proposed hotel would go right next door to the Bonanza Souvenir Shop ("Largest Souvenir Shop In the World"), directly north of the big vacant lot across the street from the existing Sahara Hotel and Casino.
Speaking of new construction, it looks like there's going to be a new development on the land now occupied by the long-closed Silver City casino (across the street from the Stardust roughly) only it won't be a new hotel-casino. Instead, developers are talking about putting in a branch of discount clothier Ross Dress For Less. No timetable was given for demolition of the old buildings or construction of the new one.
In a sign of improving fortunes for the hotels in Vegas, officials with the Venetian have announced that it is going forward with plans to add 1,000 rooms to the hotel. The expansion was originally announced more than two years ago, but a struggling economy and the severe hit on tourism caused by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks caused the company to put the whole thing on hold. The new rooms are being built on top of the south parking garage, and you can expect a completion date sometime in 2004.
And finally, a passing to note. George Sidney, director of the fabled kitsch masterpiece "Viva Las Vegas," starring Elvis and Ann-Margret, died in Las Vegas at the age of 85. His other credits include "Bye Bye Birdie," "Annie Get Your Gun," "Kiss Me Kate," and more than 35 "Little Rascals" films.
