In a case that hangs on the words of admitted liars, thieves and killers, former FBI agent John Connolly's former supervisor provided prosecutors with what they say is the smoking gun.

NewsCenter 5's David Boeri said that John Morris broke down as he admitted that, through Connolly, he received bribe money and gifts, in return for keeping the long arm of the law from touching the Whitey Bulger gang.

The alleged corruption involved other agents as well, and that the FBI itself is also on trial.

Morris navigated without looking at Connolly as he entered the courtroom Thursday. As supervisor to FBI field against, Morris and Connolly had been the bureau's celebrity team -- hailed as having brought down the Mafia.

"You have not always been truthful. You have mislead investigators," one prosecutor said.

"I have," Morris said.

Having once lied to stay out of trouble, Morris said that he must now tell the truth to stay out of trouble, under the order that gives him immunity from prosecution.

Connolly said that the truth was that he had been corrupted by Bulger, receiving $7,000 and two cases of fine wine.

"How did you get them," the prosecutor asked.

"The case of wine came from John Connolly who said, 'It's from them,' and $1,000 was delivered by Connolly to my wife. Then another case of wine (came). He told me, 'Be very careful. There was something at the bottom.' It was $1,000," Morris said.

Another time, Morris said that Bulger slipped him $5,000.

When Morris wavered on accepting one bribe, Morris said that Connolly told him that if he didn't take the gifts, Bulger would think that he didn't trust him.

Morris said that he got a phone call from Bulger in 1995 saying, "If I go to jail, you'll go to jail."

"I got religion. I pray every night," Morris said.
