A driver pleaded no contest Friday to charges in a hit-and-run that killed a University of Connecticut freshman.

Anthony P. Alvino, 19, of Lindenhurst, N.Y., pleaded no contest in Rockville Superior Court to misconduct with a motor vehicle and evading responsibility.

He faces a maximum of four years in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 23. His plea agreement calls for 10 years in prison, suspended after four. His attorney will have a right to argue for a lower sentence.

Alvino faced numerous charges in the death of Carlee Wines, 19, of Manalapan, N.J., who was hit by the SUV Alvino was driving as she crossed the street on the UConn campus in Storrs last January.

Wines' relatives were in court but did not speak.

Alvino was a student at St. Bonaventure University in New York and was visiting his girlfriend, Michelle Hall, at the time. She was in the car with him and charges are pending against her.

Witnesses told police that Hall, who was a passenger during the crash, urged Alvino to speed away.

Two other people told police Alvino and others had been drinking before the crash.
