A doctor was killed and six others injured when a car driven by a 76-year-old woman crashed into Brockton Hospital on Monday. The driver of the car was one of the doctor's patients.

Chief of radiology Dr. Mark Vasa, 58, of Norwell, Mass., was killed at about 1:30 p.m. when the vehicle went through the front door of the building near the radiology department.

"At about 1:27 p.m., an automobile crashed into the entrance of the Radiation Therapy Center at Brockton Hospital. The driver and six Brockton Hospital employees were injured during the crash," Brockton Hospital spokesman Rob Brogna said.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jane Berghold, of Brockton, Mass., according to police. She was treated and released from the hospital. Berghold was one of Vasa's patients.

"I'm sure that as part of the investigation, they will try to determine if there was any mechanical difficulties or whatever from the car. At this point, we don't see it as any intentional act by any means," Brockton Fire Department Chief Kenneth Galligan said.

One of the other victims, a secretary at the hospital, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. She was listed in critical condition.

"I was in class. I go to the nursing school, and it sounded like a big accident -- a big crash, and the power went out," witness Melissa Bilcliffe said.

Vasa has been an employee at Brockton Hospital for 20 years. He joined the hospital's radiation oncology department in 1987 and was later promoted to chief radiation oncologist, where he oversaw the daily operations of the department.

Vasa received his medical degree from the University of Colorado and served his residency in internal medicine at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, Conn., and continued in therapeutic radiology at Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston, according to Brockton Hospital's Web site.
