BROCKTON, Mass. -- A Cape Cod doctor cleared of charges in her husband's slaying spoke out Thursday about the abuse she tolerated for years.NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that a grand jury refused to indict Ann Gryboski in the death of her husband, Patrick Lancaster, of more than 20 years. Her defense attorney said he presented strong evidence to the grand jury, including medical and dental records of the many injuries Gryboski suffered at the hands of her husband."I was trained to fix things. As I learned too late, domestic abuse cannot be fixed by the abused," Gryboski said.Gryboski was arraigned in April for the slaying of her husband."It did not matter that I am a physician or that my family has money. It did not matter that our sons were now young adults. For many years, it was safer for my sons, my family, my husband's family and for me to stay," she said."You can have a person who is a professional, they can have money, they can have all the good things in life, as it were, and what goes on behind closed doors -- we don't know," attorney Kevin Reddington said.Gryboski's love affair with Lancaster began in high school and for 25 years, Reddington said, he terrorized her into a state of silence -- even bragging about ways he could kill her."She was in a position where she tried to guide him, tried to get him to get help, but she was terrified," Reddington said."We did not celebrate. We still have many emotions to cope with and much healing ahead. Our lives will be forever different, we will grieve for all that we have lost, including the loss of Patrick," Gryboski said.Gryboski broke down when she talked about trying to get help for her husband.
