A Cape Cod pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car on Lower County Road in Dennis, Mass., early Tuesday morning.

After hitting the man, the car, a 1999 Mercury Sable sedan, struck a hydrant, sparking a flood and creating a sinkhole, according to Dennis police.

Fire officials said the accident happened at Lower County Road and Trotting Park Road about 6:44 a.m.

The victim, identified as Albert Alissi, 77, of Weatogue, Conn., died at the scene, Dennis police said. Alissi and his wife, Sarah, have a summer home on Cape Cod.

The driver of the car, Todd Jenkins, 42, of Dennisport, was taken to Cape Cod Hospital where he was treated and released.

Alissi was a retired professor of social work at the University of Connecticut for nearly 40 years. UConn spokeswoman Karen Grava said Alissi earned the title of professor emeritus and was still active in the school of social work.

No charges have been filed in the crash, Dennis police said.
