A 65-year-old Everett woman was shot Friday night and ran to a neighbor's porch where she collapsed and died. Her ex-husband has been charged in what police called a deadly case of domestic violence.

"Police told us the father had shot the mother," said neighbor Rachel Musker.

Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone said George and Dorothy Philbrook were arguing outside their home. "He was very angry at the time of the dispute," said Leone.

Philbrook was arrested at a nearby liquor store and charged with the murder of his ex-wife. Neighbors said that the couple was divorced, but lived together.

Residents on Sea Street said they were startled by the shooting at about 8:20 p.m. One described hearing three shots.

"I heard the flashes and the booms," said Sheila Grandmont, "and I came out to see the body lying on the steps."

Philbrook was arrested at Vernon's Liquor store in Malden. Leone said Philbrook had reloaded his gun and was armed with fifty rounds of ammunition.

A clerk at the store told The Boston Globe that a man who was a regular customer was buying beer and cigarettes when he was tackled by three police officers.
