A Marine from Brockton is serving in Iraq, but he still managed to watch the birth of his daughter in Massachusetts.

NewsCenter 5's Jim Boyd reported that Janelle Greene arrived at one minute after midnight on Tuesday morning. Her father, Lance Cpl. Tyrelle Greene is 7,000 miles away serving in Iraq. He still he was able to witness the birth through a teleconference.

"He was ecstatic about it. He was nervous at the same time, but he was happy. He was smiling the whole time," mother Melissa Greene said.

The teleconference was a joint effort of Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center and Freedom Calls Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps troops in Iraq and Afghanistan communicate free of charge with their families at home.

"I think we both just couldn't believe that we were actually looking at each other," said Melissa Greene said.

"It was definitely good with all that everybody set up. It definitely helped a lot, made it a lot easier than just getting a phone call, you know?" Tyrelle Greene said.

Greene was deployed to Iraq in March. He's scheduled to return home in October. In the meantime, his aunt said a special gift is heading his way.

"We have his daughter's footprints on (a U.S. Marine Corps T-shirt) for him. This will be going to Iraq this week," said aunt Kate Kelliher.

The hospital and Freedom Calls set up a second conference call Tuesday afternoon, giving Tyrelle and Melissa another chance to see each another. Relatives filled the conference room and were also able to speak to Tyrelle in Iraq.

Melissa Greene said she's overwhelmed and very thankful.

"Everybody in the Marine Corps that's been helping out. Freedom Calls who actually put the whole Web cam together. Everybody gets more than credit and thank yous. There's not enough words to describe how thankful I am," she said.

Melissa Greene said but the most precious gift was that her husband was able see their daughter.

"It was really nice to know that he was able to lay his eyes on his daughter," she said.

Freedom Calls said it is running out of money and may have to shut down this month.
