Police were investigating an accident on Route 128 in Westwood Friday morning that sent a catch basin cover crashing through a car windshield, injuring the driver.

The accident happened just before 6 a.m. when a tractor-trailer dislodged the cover and it flew into the windshield of a 2003 Toyota Corolla. The car then smashed into a Jersey barrier.

A Medflight helicopter was called to pick up the motorist, who was taken to Brigham & Women's Hospital with serious injuries.

There was no word on the male driver's identity.

Two lanes on the northbound side of the highway near University Avenue were closed.

Traffic was backed up beyond Interstate 95 on the northbound side and extended as far back as Braintree. Traffic on Interstate 95 north was also backed up. Motorists were advised to seek alternate routes.
