BOSTON -- Police are investigating after two people were shot in Fitchburg late Wednesday night. The shots rang out at about 10 p.m. on Prichard Street, right around the corner from the Fitchburg Police Department.Melvin Cabrera and Elizabeth Crete, both 21, of 46 Prichard St., were shot. Police said Crete is four months pregnant."It was like they were lured to come outside and someone hit the car knowing they would come out immediately to check on the car. As soon as they came out and walked past my car, shots were fired," witness Cassandra Baker said. Two ambulances were sent to the scene but the victims were taken by helicopter to the hospital."She wasn't moving. She wasn't talking for a while, until the police came, and then she started speaking and I really don't know what she was saying," Baker said.Witnesses said the shooting might have been sparked by an earlier argument over a dirt bike."I know he was arguing with a male over here and got into his car with a bat and left. And I think that is what escalated to all this," Baker said.Police said the shooting does not appear to be random."These individuals may have been targeted for reasons that are yet to be determined," Fitchburg police Capt. Charles Tasca said.Crete was listed in critical condition and Cabrera was listed in stable condition at a local hospital. No arrests have been made.
