Lowell police are searching for the people who threw large chunks of concrete off a highway overpass, hitting several cars.

NewsCenter 5's Steve Lacy reported that the incidents occurred on Interstate 495 northbound late Wednesday night and at least four different vehicles were hit.

A black Chevy Tahoe from Maine carrying a family of four was traveling near the Boylston Street overpass about 11 p.m. when a large chunk of concrete hit the windshield on the driver's side.

The driver was able to pull over into a shopping plaza. One of the passengers got shattered glass in his or her eyes and was treated at the scene. The family was so shaken they ended up spending the night at a nearby hotel after their damaged car was towed away.

"It's scary, scary," said motorist Cynthia McMahon. "Matter of fact I live right on Boylston Street so it was kind of, like, a little wake up."

Police have not made any arrests. They are searching for teenagers they said may have been involved.

In a separate incident, a woman's driving on Interstate 495 in Chelmsford, Mass., Wednesday narrowly escaped injury when debris flew off a tractor-trailer truck in front of her, and a huge piece of steel shattered her windshield.

She was able to drive her car to the side of the road and neither she nor her 4 year old son were seriously injured. The truck driver kept going and police are now searching for that vehicle.
