BOSTON -- A Dorchester couple won a discrimination complaint against the Fung Wah bus company. The discount carrier was accused of refusing to sell tickets to the Sten-Clantons, a blind couple who wanted to travel to New York with a guide dog."I was angry. I didn't think about the humiliation, frankly, it was anger because an injustice was being done," Al Sten-Clanton said. The Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination awarded the couple a total of $60,000 in damages and ordered the company to take several steps to prevent discrimination in the future."I am really glad that the hearing officer saw that the law had clearly been violated. You know, I feel like justice was done, or will be done when they actually comply with settlement," Masha Sten-Clanton.Fung Wah denied service to the couple because of a written policy barring pets from buses. The couple argued that the guide dog was not a pet but a service animal that was required to be accommodated under state law."The big message from us about blindness, at least from me, is we want equal treatment. Sometimes we need special tools or adaptations," Al Sten-Clanton said. "But don’t go assuming other kinds of things of us, and don't assume you know more about handling our situation than we do."Fung Wah officials were not available for comment about the case.
