It's your civic duty, but not everyone wants to step up to the plate.

NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that a Cape Cod man evaded jury duty, but his methods could find him facing a judge.

It is a familiar call to duty. Each week, thousands of people are summoned to show up for jury duty. Only a few people make it into a jury box to actually hear a case.

"We have 5,000 jurors a week called for jury service and most people don't even make it on a jury," Massachusetts Jury Commissioner Pamela Wood said.

This week, judge Gary Nickerson was trying to seat a jury when he questioned a potential juror. The man claimed that he was a racist, homophobe and a liar. The man's answers were an apparent attempt to get out of jury service.

The man avoided jury duty, but the judge, who has refused comment, will ask prosecutors to see if he should face perjury charges.
