Massachusetts Bay Line Statement
On Tuesday, July 10, 2007 at approximately 7:25 am, the Massachusetts Bay Lines (MBL) commuter vessel, the Massachusetts, was involved in an incident with another commuter vessel near the North Jetty in Boston Harbor. At the time of the incident, the Massachusetts was completing its Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) chartered 6:50 am commuter trip from Hingham, MA to Rowe’s Wharf in Boston, with 151 passengers on board.Immediately after the incident, the crew of the Massachusetts took steps to ensure the safety of the passengers and secure the vessel, including distributing life jackets to every passenger and crew member. Once secured, the crew was then able to dock the vessel where emergency personnel were on hand to attend to anyone requiring medical attention. Currently, Massachusetts Bay Lines is fully cooperating with officials from the United States Coast Guard, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the City of Boston, to provide any information relevant to determining the cause of the incident. As this investigation is just underway, we are unable to provide specific details about this incident to the general public.MBL’s safety record is outstanding. Founded in 1963, MBL carries over 200,000 passengers each year on our charter and commuter boats. The management of the Massachusetts Bay Lines is proud of its crew for their swift action in responding to this incident. Our primary concern is with the health and safety of our passengers and crew. We will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities during their investigation and we encourage future passengers on any of our vessels or charters to call us at 617-542-8000 if they have any questions.
