BOSTON -- Heavy fog may have led to a collision between two commuter boats in Boston Harbor early Tuesday, but authorities said it did not appear that any of the passengers were seriously injured. The two vessels crashed into each other between Hingham, Mass., and Boston's Rowe's Wharf during a period of extremely low visibility at about 7:30 a.m.The vessels were identified as The Massachusetts, with 151 passengers on board, and The Laura, with four people on board.NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the head-on collision occurred near the Long Island Bridge. Passengers getting off The Massachusetts said both vessels had been traveling slowly because of the fog when the crash occurred."That boat was crunched pretty good. The visibility was terrible today -- quarter-mile visibility. We don't know if that was the cause of the incident, it is something we will look into," said Zach Zubricki, of the U.S. Coast Guard.Witnesses also said a third, smaller boat might have contributed to the crash."I was watching the smaller boat cut across us and saying, 'Oh my God,' and then we just heard it hit us," passenger Kathy Lennon said.Following the accident, The Massachusetts was docked at Rowe's Wharf. The other, The Laura, was at Charlestown's Mystic Pier. Boston emergency officials said they were evaluating several passengers who had minor injuries. Only one person was taken to the hospital."There was one gentlemen who had some minor lacerations from the glass, and a couple other gentlemen that had some minor scrapes," said passenger Paula Marcangelo.Marcangelo, who works for the Coast Guard, helped bandage victims and distribute life vests."It was scary. It was scary. It was like punching a beer can -- that is the sound you got," passenger Mal Johnson said. The Massachusetts had returned to service just a few weeks ago after being refurbished after a fire on June 12, 2006.The boats are privately owned, but contract with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority for commuter services. The 101-foot Laura is owned by Boston Harbor Cruises, and the 88-foot Massachusetts is owned by Massachusetts Bay Lines Inc.
