A man who fell off a cliff after trying to break into a Swampscott home has died, according to police.

Alex Bonah, 34, of Revere, died on Saturday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. An autopsy conducted that same day at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Boston determined the cause of death to be head trauma due to an accidental fall.

Officials said Bonah burglarized a home at 16 Banks Road just after 1 p.m. on July 4, stealing jewelry and about $100. A neighbor who witnessed the break-in called police.

Officers responded, and a foot chase involving four Swampscott police officers ensued, eventually leading to the Paradise Road area. Officers ordered Bonah to stop, but he instead tried to scale down a cliff estimated to be 40- to 50-feet high.

Witnesses told police Bonah was descending the cliff when he appeared to lose his footing and fell. No officers were near him at the time of his fall.
