23 Sent To Hospital After Swimming In Pool

Group Complains Of Skin Irritations

Twenty-one children and two adults were treated at local hospitals after complaining of skin and eye irritations at a West Boylston pool.

Officials said that the group was swimming in a pool with high chlorine levels at Camp Woodhaven on Campground Road early Friday afternoon when they started to complain about itchy eyes and skin. The children range in age from 9 to 12.

"I had a little bit of itchy eyes," said Mackenzie Clendenin, who reacted to the chlorine. "My stomach felt all queasy and sick."

The first swim class of the day had just ended at the camp, and a new batch of kids had jumped in the water.

"Patrick, who is the health counselor here, said, 'Everybody out of the pool.' I think he was testing the pool for chlorine, and I think he noticed there was a high level. Immediately upon discovering that, he got all the kids out of the pool," parent Bob Howland said.

"There was irritation of the eyes, like a sunburn almost, and shivering, as well," camp EMT Emily Boutilette said.

Camp EMTs evaluated the children and called in outside paramedics. The children were taken to area hospitals, as camp directors notified parents.

"They said that there was a chemical that didn’t dissolve in the water, and they are going to take the necessary precautions next time to make sure it doesn't happen again," parent Dorothy Amaral said.

"We are investigating to see what happened and what was the problem with the chemicals in the pool," Camp Woodhaven Executive Director George DeTellis said. "I can report that those 21 children were released from the hospital after evaluation."
