The mother of a newborn that was found dead in a Milford garbage truck in January was arraigned in a Worcester courtroom on Wednesday on charges of involuntary manslaughter and improper disposal of a body.

NewsCenter 5's Shiba Russell reported that Allissa Pugh, 28, of Milford, told investigators in January that she delivered the baby unexpectedly and he was stillborn.

The deceased baby was found by town workers in a BFI garbage truck in Milford on Saturday, Jan. 6. The placenta and umbilical cord were still intact.

Investigators said Pugh gave birth to a live, full-term baby boy in her home on or around Jan. 2. The medical examiner said the baby died from injuries sustained around the time of his birth.

"During the birth process, the baby was alive. No question about that," prosecutor Blake Rubin said.

Pugh pleaded not guilty and was released on $5,000 bail.

"She is quite sad, obviously. She is in shock. She was arrested yesterday afternoon. The arrest itself was a little bit unexpected, and so she is quite distressed today," defense attorney Paul Ettenberg said.

When Russell asked Pugh for her version of events outside the courtroom, she grabbed the microphone.

"You want me to break it?" Pugh asked.

Pugh will be electronically monitored but will be allowed to go to work. Her 8-year-old son is in Department of Social Services custody.

The state's Safe Haven law allows new mothers to leave their babies in safe places such as hospitals, fire stations or police stations, within seven days of birth with no questions asked.

Since the law was passed, four babies have been successfully surrendered. January's discovery was the first death of a baby since the law was passed.

The Baby Safe Haven hot line is: 866-814-SAFE.
