There will be no school in Quincy on Wednesday as teachers continue their strike.

NewsCenter 5's Janet Wu reported that a superior judge told the teachers late Tuesday that the judges will be fined if they do not return to the classroom by Wednesday morning.

Quincy's 900 teachers have been without a contract for one year. They claim that the 14 percent salary hike over four years that the city is offering would be offset by increases in their health insurance and other costs.

"That does look good on paper when you see the 14 percent. We don’t get reimbursed for degrees. We are required to get our master's," said Jennifer Garrett, of Wollaston Elementary. "Then, they want to take that away from our health care."

"Not one of them would receive a pay cut. We are not proposing any pay cut for any employee in the city of Quincy," Quincy Mayor William Phelan said.

Teachers fanned out throughout the city with leaflets to win back parents' support.

"We teach our kids that there are rules that need to be followed, and if you don't follow them there are consequences. We are going to pay the consequences, and we are willing to do it before it is worth it for every teacher in the state, and it is worth it for every student in the state," teacher Susan Credon said.

"Quincy pays 90 percent for an employee's HMO family plan with a $5 co-payment. There is no community in the state that pays higher," Phelan said.

"This is not about a $5 co-pay. This is about being able to make a living and stay ahead of the game like everyone else. The mayor has refused, hasn't talked about raises in his office and his staff and his raise over the last couple of years and the years to come," said Vin McGuire, of Wollaston Elementary School.

If the teachers do not return to the classroom by 6 a.m. Wednesday, the Quincy Education Association will be fined $150,000, according to officials.
