The head of a charter school in Marblehead was accused Monday of assaulting a student.

NewsCenter 5's Shiba Russell reported that police said Thomas Commeret, 55, allegedly grabbed and pushed a 14-year-old female student who had allegedly caught him drinking alcohol in his office.

"We have an allegation of this defendant pushing by the arms a 14-year-old girl against a door -- the door being the dangerous weapon in the situation," prosecutor Meghan Riordan said.

The alleged victim told police that she was physically assaulted and threatened. She said that she caught the head of the school drinking liquor in his office.

Commeret has led the Marblehead Charter School for more than 10 years. He is currently on administrative leave.

"I worry that other charter schools should make sure that they put safeguards in so that this doesn't happen at their school. If you give one man too much power, he thinks he is untouchable, and that's what happened for the past 12 years," parent Laura Towey said.

Commeret's attorney said that the alleged victim accused a few people of assaulting her before identifying the head of the school.

"I believe her 100 percent. I don't think that she would ever make these charges up. I think that when Mr. Commeret professes his innocence, I don't think he's truthful on that," former board member Nanny Noyes said.

Noyes is one of five board members who voted not to renew his contract. She said that it was time for change, even before the assault allegations surfaced.

"My client is confident that the judicial system works in a way that the truth comes out. All of this creates more heat than light. This is inappropriate," defense attorney Debra Delvecchio said.
