The Sagamore Bridge flyover on Cape Cod apparently isn't solving all the summer traffic problems it was designed to reduce.

But drivers on Memorial Day weekend found that it's not getting to the Cape that's difficult, it's getting home.

NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that Cape-bound traffic was heavy on Friday as travelers tried to get to their vacation destinations. But it was much worse on Monday as people tried to get off Cape. Traffic was backed up 17 miles to Yarmouth. Many said the traffic at the flyover was worse than when motorists had to use the old rotary system that was in place at the bridge.

State transportation officials are saying they are planning changes. They will be adding electronic signs encouraging Cape visitors to stagger arrival and departure times. They may also change the roadway around Exit 1 on the other side of the Sagamore Bridge, where Route 6a merges into Route 6.

They will also be looking at the emergency traffic plan to be updated next month. It calls for routing traffic through the Massachusetts Military Reservation to avoid congestion at Exit 1.
