The family of an innocent bystander spoke out Tuesday about the circumstances that ended a young man's life and left two others hurt.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that Tufts University graduate and band member Paul Farris, 23, was killed early Sunday morning after a man being chased by police crashed his sport utility vehicle into a cab in Somerville. His girlfriend and the cab driver were also injured.

The driver of the sport utility vehicle, Javier Morales, 29, of Somerville, was arraigned from his hospital bed and pleaded not guilty to motor vehicle homicide. He was ordered held on $100,000 bail. Morales was charged twice before with driving with a suspended license.

"It's very strange. It's very surreal. You hear about it in the papers, and you read about it. You report a television story, and you say, 'How will they even deal with this?' It goes away a couple of days later, but this is not going away. It's difficult," Farris' father, John Farris, said. "He was a chubby-cheeked happy baby, and it never changed. He was really smart, and he was so incredibly outgoing. Everyone he touched loved him. He was special."

Farris and his girlfriend Caitlin Hoyt were headed home when the SUV hit their cab. Morales was running from a state trooper, who continued the chase into a thickly-populated neighborhood.

"You know and I know that you don't have high-speed chases in neighbors," said the victim's uncle, Gregory Farris. "We don't know the facts. Maybe they disengaged and we don't know that, maybe they didn't, but I expect that the Massachusetts State Police, as good a crew as they are, will get out in front of this and work with the family."

Hoyt remains in a coma at Massachusetts General Hospital.
