Home Depot Takes Action After InvestigationCompany Returns To Fix Resident's WindowsPOSTED: 5:48 pm EDT May 3,
2007 BOSTON -- Home Depot is taking action after a Team 5 investigation into the chain's remodeling services. The do-it-yourself giant is trying to fix its reputation with one of its many disgruntled customers."There's no flush corners. You can see it sticking out there. It's not even tight up against the sill," customer Diane Turk said.NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly reported that six years ago, Turk hired Home Depot to install her new windows, but after shelling out thousands of dollars, she claims the job was never done right."I don't think if you have a reputable contractor they would have left the window looking like this," she said. Now, because of a Team 5 investigation, Turk's windows are finally getting fixed. Gary White is vice president of Home Depot's At Home Services Division."It was only after we brought this woman's name to your attention that somebody from Home Depot called back and said, 'We're going to come fix your windows.' That to me doesn't sound like taking care of your customers," Kelly said."Yeah, Sean. I can tell you any time we disappoint a customer, that is unacceptable. For a situation to have gone on six years, unacceptable, on every account," White said.Turk isn't the only customer complaining. Fred Elsbury is the president of the Atlanta Better Business Bureau."We identified about 15 different types of problems that were causing about 70 percent of their complaints, and, for example, out of that segment, we identified that half of those problems were coming from contract services. You know, I think they have an ongoing challenge in maintaining the quality of their contractors," Elsbury said.Despite that, Elsbury said the Home Depot has a satisfactory record."We look at it overall, because our goal is to make sure they're addressing that problem and reviewing it on an ongoing basis. And as long as we are satisfied they've got a process to do that, it doesn't mean the problems are going to go away, but hopefully they're going to be minimized over a period of time," he said.White joined an online discussion posted on TheBostonChannel.com"The Home Depot is fully responsible for and stands behind the work of its independent contractor Authorized Service Providers. I would like to apologize to any customer who has had a less than favorable experience with Home Services, or who, for whatever reason, may have been unclear as to the fact that the Home Depot's Authorized Service Providers are fully qualified third-party contractors," White wrote. In the meantime, Team 5 learned that the president of Home Depot's At Home Services resigned last month. The company did not give a reason. Copyright 2007 by TheBostonChannel.com. All rights reserved.
