Boston -- After a two-week battle with pneumonia, the Franklin Park Zoo's baby Baird's tapir has made a full recovery and has a new name. The tapir, now called Seamus, is on exhibit in the zoo's tropical rain forest. Dr. Haylet Murphy, the zoo's director of veterinary services said, "with any neonatal pneumonia, there is a risk of recurrence, and we will continue to monitor him closely." To celebrate Seamus' birth and speedy recovery, Franklin Park Zoo is offering anyone who shares the name Seamus free admission next Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. The name "Seamus" was the top pick of the tropical forest's 16-member staff because of its Irish roots. The baby tapir was born the day born before St. Patrick's Day.
Nine contestants picked the winning name and each will receive a coveted behind-the-scenes tour of Franklin Park Zoo and a one-year Zoodoption of the species. Baird's tapirs are considered endangered in the wild. Tapirs are the largest land mammals found in Latin America.
