Some Locks Offer More Protection

John Shufro of Needham Lock Service said homeowners might want to consider a comprehensive approach to protecting their homes from bump keys.

He pointed out this is merely the latest way of picking a lock. He had not heard of bump keys until Team 5 Investigates contacted him. After a quick search on the Internet, Shufro was able to make his own bump key.

Shufro said you can buy locks that are "bump proof." They tend to cost about $100 to 200 more per lock than a standard lock, and when you are shopping for locks, you should make a point to ask the sales person about it.
Shufro said these locks may offer more protection:

    • Schlage Primus
    • Medeco Residential Deadbolt
    • Medeco Commercial Deadbolt
    • Medeco Commercial Knob Lockset
    • Medeco Commercial Lever Lockset
    • Medeco Dropbolt

However, no lock offers absolute protection and there are other tips Shufro suggested that homeowners might want to consider:

    • Alarm systems
    • Safes
    • Putting protective coating on windows that are near or surrounding your doors
