In the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre, the need for a way to reach students anytime, anywhere is clear, school officials said.

NewsCenter 5's Jim Morelli reported that local company, MobileSphere, has fielded a lot of interest from college administrators regarding its text-message emergency-alert system.

"A lot of students have, like, text messaging and things like that, so kids are constantly texting up and down the street in their spare time," said Boston University student Corey Lowe.

Next week, MobileSphere will launch an emergency broadcast system for college campuses that will rely on text message delivery.

"Had (Virginia Tech) university had some sort of text messaging system in place, they probably could have reached students sooner and possibly save lives," said Gavin Macomber of MobileSphere.

"It's important that the system has to be able to handle a huge volume in a very short period of time," said Toufic Mobarak of MobileSphere.

MobileSphere said its system could deliver 25,000 emergency text messages in 10 minutes. Some students at Boston University said it appear the time has come for an emergency text messaging system.

"Everybody is all over the place, but everybody always has their cell phone and it is pretty much always on. So it is a good way to get the word out quickly," said Boston University student Emily Simpson.

Although they hope for 100 percent notification, MobileSphere said they realize that some people will not have their phones on during a campus emergency and will learn of it by word of mouth.
