A Worcester teenager could be paralyzed after being hit by a stray bullet while he was in his own home.

NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that police said the 13-year-old victim was in the living room of his home Saturday night, when an argument outside escalated into gunfire.

Shawn Sims, 36, was arrested Monday after turning himself in to Worcester police.

"We are going to go in and turn him in -- Mr. Sims. And we are going to turn him into the police station this morning. Obviously, with the investigation into a young boy who was shot, we are going to turn him in. And Mr. Sims is anxious to turn himself in a get the process started. He is not hiding or anything, so we are going to go and do that right now," Sims' attorney Chris Loconto said.

Sims was out on parole after serving time for manslaughter. Sims did not answer any questions about the shooting Monday.

Police said it was a bullet from Sims' guns that at least temporarily paralyzed a 13-year-old boy.

"Mr. Sims arrived at that address and was having a conversation with two other adult males outside the front stairs in front of the dwelling. Shortly after a verbal altercation started, at one point Mr. Sims pulled out a firearm and fired one round missing the two individuals outside, but that one round did enter the front door of 5 Douglas St., striking a 13-year-old boy in the back," said Worcester police Sgt. Kerry Hazelhurst.

"I was sitting at a picnic table with my daughter and heard a bang," said one neighbor.

Officials said the boy's injuries are not considered life threatening.

"Our prayers go out to the victim and the victim's family because it is a tragedy," Loconto said.
