Oscars 2002: Complete Coverage

'Lord Of The Rings' Lands 13 Oscar Nominations

UPDATED: 5:17 p.m. EST March 20, 2002

Oscar voters must have decided it would be best to "ring" in Tuesday morning with some "beautiful" thoughts: They honored the mystical fantasy "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," with 13 Oscar nominations for this year's Academy Awards, and handed Russell Crowe a best actor nomination for "A Beautiful Mind."

In addition to its best picture spot, "Rings" rang in nominations for supporting actor Ian McKellen, and nominations for Jackson for both directing and adapting the screenplay (with Frances Walsh and Philippa Boyens) from the late J.R.R. Tolkien's global best seller.

The next-highest number of nominations came with the true-life drama "A Beautiful Mind" and the modern-tuned musical "Moulin Rouge," which scored eight Oscar nominations each, including nods for best picture. The other two best picture nominees were "In the Bedroom" and "Gosford Park."

A winner last year for "Gladiator," Crowe's "Mind" nod was his third consecutive best actor nomination. He will face off against perennial nominees Sean Penn, for "I Am Sam," and Denzel Washington, for "Training Day." First time nominees in the category were Tom Wilkinson, for "In the Bedroom," and Will Smith, for "Ali."

This year's best actress nominees include first-time nominees Halle Berry for "Monster's Ball," Nicole Kidman for "Moulin Rouge," and Renee Zellweger for "Bridget Jones' Diary," who will vie for the statuette with previous Oscar winners Judi Dench for "Iris," and Sissy Spacek for "In the Bedroom."

In addition to McKellen in the supporting actor category, Jim Broadbent was nominated for "Iris," Ethan Hawke for "Training Day," Ben Kinglsey for "Sexy Beast," and Jon Voight for"Ali."

"A Beautiful Mind's" Jennifer Connelly was the only newcomer to the best supporting actress category. She'll compete against previous nominees Helen Mirren for "Gosford Park," and Kate Winslet, for "Iris."; and previous winners Maggie Smith for "Gosford Park," and Marisa Tomei for "In the Bedroom."

"A Beautiful Mind" also snared director Ron Howard his first Oscar nod. Howard's competitors include Peter Jackson for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," Robert Altman for "Gosford Park, Ridley Scott for "Black Hawk Down," and David Lynch for "Mulholland Drive."

Not surprisingly, the blockbuster computer-animated comedies "Shrek," "Monsters, Inc.," and "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" were nominated for the first-ever animated feature film Oscar.

At least three films enjoyed their nominations with bittersweet celebrations. Both "Moulin Rouge" and "In the Bedroom's" best picture nods came without nominations for their directors, Baz Luhrmann and Todd Field, respectively.

On the flip side, Ridley Scott grabbed his second consecutive best director nomination for "Black Hawk Down," yet the film did not receive a best picture nod.

The best song category found the return of a former Beatle to the roster. Paul McCartney, who was last nominated for 1974's "Live and Let Die" (from the James Bond film of the same name), scored a nod for best original song for the title track to the Cameron Crowe film "Vanilla Sky."

McCartney's competition in the category includes Enya's "May it Be," from "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"; Sting's "Until," from "Kate & Leopold"; and Diane Warren's "Pearl Harbor" love theme "There You'll Be," which was recorded by Faith Hill.

Earning career nominations 15 and 16 was composer Randy Newman, with a best original song nod for "If I Didn't Have You," from "Monsters, Inc." He was also nominated for best original score for the film. Despite the scores of nominations, Newman has yet to win an Oscar.

The Academy Awards will be broadcast live March 24 from Hollywood.
