State police arrested a Lawrence man and charged him with attempted murder Thursday after a woman driver called them on her cell phone to say she had been shot at by another driver and was following the car.

Police said about 10 p.m. Thursday the woman, whose identity they did not release, called and reported that she was fired on at the corner of Mount Vernon Street and South Broadway in Lawrence by the driver of a blue 1997 Ford Explorer.

She told police she was following the Ford onto Route 495 southbound in Lawrence and then onto Route 93 southbound.

Troopers took up the chase after seeing the Ford on Route 93 southbound. The Ford eventually stopped in a parking lot on Route 129 at West Street and the operator was arrested. He was identified as Rodney Harper, 41, of Lawrence.

Harper was arrested and charged with attempted murder and carrying a firearm without a license and with ammunition.
