Investigators searched a Lawrence funeral home after making an explosive discovery inside a Salisbury home Tuesday.

NewsCenter 5's Todd Kazakiewich reported that bomb squad crews searched the Plonowski Funeral Home in Lawrence, Mass., Tuesday night after allegedly finding explosives and weapons in the Salisbury home of David Plonowski, 44.

The funeral home is owned by Plonowski's parents and he recently worked at the funeral home as an undertaker.

Tuesday, Plonowski pleaded not guilty to weapons and drug charges in Essex County Court. He was arrested late Monday during a drug raid at his Pike Street home in Salisbury.

"The state police bomb squad began searching the home and when they got to the basement they located what appears to be some large military-type ammunition," Salisbury Police Chief David L'Esperance said.

Neighbors were evacuated for a time as police removed explosives from the Salisbury home. They were considered dangerous enough that a military bomb disposal unitl was called in from Newport, R.I., to remove the weapons, grenades and land mines and take them to a secluded beach for demolition.

Police found some additional weapons during their search of the funeral home. Plonowski had a gun license but it had expired.

Plonowski pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Newburyport District Court on Tuesday on charges of cocaine trafficking, carrying a firearm without a license and use of a firearm while committing a felony.

He was being held without bail on drug and weapons charges and a previous domestic assault charge. He is due back in court April 17.
