The dry, windy weather prompted officials to post a red flag warning for brush fires.

NewsCenter 5's Jorge Quiroga reported that a brush fire in Bellingham threatened some homes on Thursday, and there were more Friday.

"When they call a red flag, it's bad. It's very dry, low humidity, high winds," Massachusetts Forest Fire Control spokesman Charlie Cicciu said.

Cicciu scans the horizon from a perch high above a wooded area in Sharon.

"What a red flag warning does is it tells us basically how fast the fire is going to travel," Massachusetts Forest Fire Control spokesman Charlie Cicciu said.

After little snow this winter, dry leaves and twigs make for perfect kindling, but it’s the wind that feeds the flames. Gusts on Thursday fueled a fast-moving brush fire that burned an area long Interstate 495.
