UConn Hit-And-Run Defendants Enter Pleas

18-Year-Olds Face Judges Months Later

POSTED: 8:38 am EDT March 30, 2007

All three defendants in the University of Connecticut fatal hit-and-run case appeared before judges on Friday.

Anthony Alvino, of Lindenhurst, N.Y., who police have identified as the driver of the sport utility vehicle that struck Carlee Wines on the UConn campus on Jan. 20, is scheduled to face a judge on Friday in addition to the SUV's passengers, Michelle Hall, of Wantagh, N.Y., and Kara Satalin, of Syracuse, N.Y.

All of the defendants are 18 and all entered not guilty pleas in court on Friday morning.

Wines, 19, died after she was struck in a crosswalk on the Storrs campus.

According to charging documents, Alvino has told police that he had some drinks before the fatal collision. He told police he didn't stop because he was afraid he would get into trouble.

"Nobody wins at the end of the day. It's just a question of what's a fair way to resolve this," said Richard Brown, Alvino's attorney.

Alvino's girlfriend, Hall, has been charged with aiding and abetting, evading responsibility. Satalin is charged with providing alcohol.

"We're looking now at whether or not a passenger in a car has any liability for the conduct of the driver," said Philip Russell, Hall's attorney. "Evading responsibility is the main charge and it's a charge that really applies to the driver of the car."

Authorities have arrested and charged at least two others in connection with the investigation on charges of providing alcohol to minors. They are also scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

Besthoff reported more charges could be pending because investigators are looking into the possibility that Alvino's parents tried to cover the whole thing up.
