Dockworkers in Port Everglades, Fla., found a surprise as they were unloading a shipment of tiles from a Venezuelan cargo ship -- a stowaway.

But they didn't have to call immigration services because the stowaway was a 3-month-old puppy.

They nicknamed her Lana, and the puppy survived six days and nights on the high seas.

They figure the female puppy, which was probably a stray, slipped into the container in Maracaibo, Venezuela, and hid in there for the 1,200-mile journey as the ship made its way from South America to Fort Lauderdale. The little international traveler is now at a Boca Raton animal hospital, on an IV and being nursed back to health.

The vet said Lana is being treated for a skin disease, a tick-borne illness, parasites and pneumonia. The caramel-colored puppy is about 2 pounds underweight, probably from the long days and nights without food and water while she was in the container. An animal rescue group is helping to pay the costs of her medical care.

The vet who's treating her believes the puppy will make a good pet, despite the traumatic trip she endured.
