Cape Cod police said they faced a knife-wielding man standing outside a West Chatham home during the weekend.

NewsCenter 5's Amalia Barreda reported that police used a beanbag gun to subdue the suspect.

"He kept saying, 'You shot me.' And we had him on the ground, and I said to him, 'Think about it for a second. What did I tell you I was going to shoot you with? A beanbag. You got hit with a beanbag,'" Harwich Police Department Officer Michael Porter said.

Cape Cod police said a Remington shotgun was exactly what the Sunday morning incident with 27-year-old John Foster called for. The gun's orange stock identifies it as a less than lethal force weapon that fires small beanbags filled with pellets.

On Sunday morning, Porter answered a call for assistance from Chatham police who had surrounded a suicidal man armed with a knife. It all unfolded back across from the Chatham Motel. Police responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute between a man, who appeared to be drunk, and his girlfriend.

"He became very agitated. Took several steps towards me in an aggressive manner. Kept saying, 'Shoot me. Shoot me.' I again requested him to drop the knife and stop. He didn't, and at that point I hit him with a beanbag round. It hit him right in the lower abdomen area," Porter said.

"Contrary to popular belief, police officers do not desire to kill people. They do not desire to shoot people. But they also need to stop the assaultive behavior," Harwich Police Department Chief William Mason said.

Last week, Barnstable police shot and wounded a man who made a daring escape attempt in a car he had allegedly commandeered.

Foster suffered intense pain and a bruise. According to police, it was a favorable outcome over the incident in Barnstable.

"No innocent bystanders were injured. No police officers were injured, and the subject was uninjured, required no medical attention and was delivered to court today," Chatham Police Department Lt. Michael Anderson said.

Foster is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation before he is arraigned on numerous charges.
