Two 18-year-olds from New York turned themselves in to police on Thursday in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of a University of Connecticut student last month.

Eyewitness News has learned from campus police at noon that former St. Bonaventure University student Anthony Alvino, of Lindenhurst, N.Y., and his girlfriend, UConn freshman Michelle Hall, of Wantagh, N.Y., turned themselves in after learning of warrants out for their arrest.

UConn freshman Carlee Wines was hit on Jan. 20 while crossing a street on campus. She died at Hartford Hospital three days later.

Campus police told Channel 3 Eyewitness News reporter Len Bestoff that arrest warrants had been signed for two people on Thursday and that there could be more arrests pending.

UConn police seized a gray Nissan Armada with front-end damage on Jan. 30. Campus police said that, through their investigation, they determined that Alvino was driving the Armada and that Hall was the front-seat passenger. Police said after the crash, the car was driven into New York state and eventually was taken to Long Island, where it was located by UConn police.

UConn police said they received a break in the case when Dick Brown, an attorney for the Alvino family, said the Armada was being kept on Long Island.

"My client, Mr. Alvino, has been cooperative since day one with the police in terms of turning over the vehicle in question," Brown said.

"The location of the vehicle was fed into police headquarters late one night. The motivation of the phone call was potentially related to the significant media exposure," Maj. Ron Blicher said.

Alvino is facing multiple charges, including felony charges of misconduct with a motor vehicle, evading responsibility and tampering with evidence.

Hall faces multiple charges, including aiding and abetting evading responsibility, conspiracy to commit identity theft and inducing minors to procure liquor. Alvino was released on $250,000 bond, and Hall was released on $100,000 bond.

The Wines family, in a written statement, said, "We are hopeful and praying that today's arrest will provide an opportunity to answer the many questions that have haunted us since this horrific incident."
