Court Tosses Bestiality Charge Against Cape Man

Man Given Pretrial Probation

Bestiality and animal cruelty charges leveled against a Buzzards Bay man were dismissed in Falmouth District Court Wednesday after the man was given six months pre-trial probation.

Leon Belanger III, 40, of 271 Head of the Bay Road, was arrested by Bourne police in August after Belanger's wife, Gayle, said she caught him ''engaged in an unnatural sex act with the family dog,'' according to court records, reported the Cape Cod Times.

The bestiality charge was dropped but Belanger will remain on probation on the animal cruelty charge until July 7.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael Trudeau said pretrial probation does not denote an admission of guilt or a guilty finding.

Court documents showed that Belanger's wife went to Bourne police last August saying she had discovered her husband having sex with the family dog. Her husband's attorney said she gave differing accounts of the incident and said the different versions raised questions about her credibility and sanity, the Cape Cod Times reported.

Court records indicated the couple was going through a divorce at the time the allegations were made.
