MILFORD, Mass. -- The mother of a baby found dead in the trash told police that the infant was stillborn, but the investigation into the infant's death continued in Milford on Monday.NewsCenter 5's Jack Harper reported that officials were still awaiting the results of an autopsy. The infant's mother, who has not been identified, has an 8-year-old son. The woman's live-in boyfriend said he did not even know she was pregnant, police said.Officials said they interviewed the mother."We interviewed the mother so we have a sense of the circumstances and events based upon, you know, I guess her perspective," said Milford Police Chief Thomas O'Loughlin. The deceased baby boy was found by town workers in a BFI garbage truck in Milford on Saturday. The placenta and umbilical cord were still intact. More than 24 hours later, the parents showed up at the police station."The question is was the child born alive or was it a stillborn and that is really a key factor for us and that will determine in what direction investigators move," said O'Loughlin. If the baby was alive, the charge could range from manslaughter to homicide. If the baby was stillborn, the mother could be charged with disposal of a body. The Department of Social Services is also looking at the case, although there is no indication that the 8-year-old boy will be removed from the home.
