BOSTON -- Some people want the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to remove advertisements for controversial video games from its Green Line cars.NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported Monday that an ad for "Grand Theft Auto" adorns MBTA trains and buses. In the game, a player starts as a street thug who wants to become a crime boss, but to get there, the player shoots police officers and innocent people."These games promote and celebrate not just graphic violence, but also really in this one lawlessness," child psychologist Susan Linn said.
The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is joined by numerous public officials who demanded that the MBTA remove the ads."Too violent -- we shouldn’t have the MBTA encourage (it). We hope the general manager of the does remove it from the MBTA. It's not a place to advertise," Boston Mayor Tom Menino said. The ads come at a time when violence in Boston is at a 10-year high."We were just appalled that the MBTA was actually brining violence into communities where children were getting killed," Linn said. The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood sent the MBTA a letter urging the agency to remove the ads."Pursuant to the MBTA's guidelines for advertising, the MBTA has reviewed the images and content of the advertisements at issue. Based upon this analysis, the MBTA determined the images and content of the advertisements are consistent with the MBTA's guidelines and do not fall within the constitutionally permissible prohibitions within the guidelines," the MBTA said in a statement Monday afternoon.
