BOSTON -- A Cape Cod middle school teacher is upset about alleged threats made by a student and by what she says is a lack of response by school officials.NewsCenter 5's Gail Huff reported that the Quashnet School teacher in Mashpee claims the student threatened to kill people at his school, but there was little done by school administrators. The fifth-grade teacher, Jeanne Cannon, said she has not been back to school since the threat was made.
"We were nearing dismissal. It was about 2:15 and he stood up and said that he was going to kill everyone in the class, even if it meant one-by-one. And he said that, 'Well, I probably shouldn't have said that I'd kill everybody in the class, just this particular student,'" Cannon said. The teacher reported the threat to the principal, who told the superintendent. But Cannon is concerned that parents of the other students in the classroom weren't notified. Mashpee police found out two days ago from a parent, and now they're investigating."We want to have an opportunity to evaluate the boy's accessibility to weapons. We want to check and see if there's some history there that we should be concerned with," Mashpee Police Chief Rodney Collins said.Cannon said after the tragedy at Colorado's Columbine High School, all school threats should be taken seriously. She did not feel this one was."I felt unsafe, I felt frustrated, I felt like I was going up the chain of command, trying to get some action, wanting them to react, wanting them to get help for this child and also to provide safety for my students," Cannon said. The student was given an in-school suspension and police are deciding whether there will be any further action.
