School activities at Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston were canceled Wednesday after the school received a threat against a sports team.

NewsCenter 5's Sean Kelly reported that police searched an area near the school looking for two people -- a woman between 30 and 40 years of age and a female teenager.

Police said the school secretary received a telephone threat against the freshman football team at about 12:45 p.m. Police said the call came from a nearby convenience store.

"They had threatened harm against the team, and it was a general threat, but repeated several times, so we were pretty concerned and took appropriate precautions for this," said Kingston School Superintendent Dana Parker.

A second threat was made to a church official about an hour after the phone call was received.

"A church in the area had a young woman who approached, asked to speak to someone, the pastor, and wanted to tell them about the possibility of harm coming to the freshman football team. That young woman was told that the pastor was not present and that young woman then ran into the woods behind the church. The church can be seen from the market," said Kingston Police Chief Joseph Rebello.

It is unclear if the teen attends the school.

"Officers of the Kingston Police Department, the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department and the Massachusetts State Police conducted a search of the area using dogs, helicopters and officers on foot. We have not located any individual who went into that area," said Rebello.

A letter was sent home to parents on Wednesday advising them of the threats.

"While we feel that this threat is not credible, we take the safety of our students and our staff very seriously," the letter from Principal Richard Kelley said.

Parker said all of the after-school programs for Thursday have been canceled, but classes will be held as scheduled. Police will be at the school to provide extra security on Thursday.
