Cavs Sign Gibson To Multi-Year Extension

POSTED: 10:39 am EDT July 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Cleveland Cavaliers announced a multi- year contract extension with guard Daniel Gibson on Wednesday.

Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Gibson, 22, averaged career-highs of 10.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 58 games for the Cavs last season, his second in the league. The 43.2 percent shooter actually shot better from behind the three-point line, at 44 percent, good enough for fifth in the NBA.

"Daniel has been an important part of our Cavs family the last two seasons. He has worked to grow as a player and we love his passion for winning and the game itself. He's been great off the court as well, and is exactly the kind of person we're proud to have with us," said Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry. "In re-signing Daniel, it helps the Cavs both build continuity and create a young core that will be in Cleveland for many years to come."

As a rookie out of Texas, Gibson averaged 4.6 points in 16.5 minutes per game during the 2006-07 season, before coming on strong in the playoffs. Gibson scored a franchise-record 19 points in the fourth quarter of Cleveland's 98-82 Game Six win to clinch the Eastern Conference finals over the Detroit Pistons, and averaged 10.8 points per game in the NBA Finals loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
