BOSTON -- She was not the star-crossed lover played by Kate Winslet in the film, but the death and burial of another Kate, Titanic passenger Catherine “Kate” Buckley is a story that will be told and remembered in Boston this month.Kate Buckley was 22 years old when she walked across the gangway to board the ill-fated liner in Ireland in 1912.“Kate was a domestic from Cork and was just another young immigrant girl coming from Ireland,” said Bob Bracken of the Titanic International Society in Freehold, N.J. “Like many others, she left Ireland to better herself and boarded Titanic to begin an adventure.”Historical PhotosBuckley’s half-sister Margaret lived in West Roxbury, Mass., and had sent Kate money to pay for her passage to America. When Kate entered the frigid waters of the North Atlantic as the ship was sinking, the lifeboats were filled and gone, according to the historical society. Her death likely came quickly.Of the 1,513 passengers and crew who died, only 330 bodies were recovered. Seventy-eight Irish natives were among them. Only one third-class passenger, Kate Buckley, was brought ashore for burial. Her body had been found by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett, chartered by White Star Line, a week after the sinking. According to the ship’s log, she would have been wearing a long blue overcoat, a blue serge jacket and skirt, a white blouse, blue corsets and gray knickers. While most were buried in Nova Scotia, Kate’s sister Margaret asked that Kate complete her journey and be brought to Boston for burial. While she was buried in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury, her grave was unmarked and lacking a headstone. In 2004, her grave was located by Bracken and another member of the historical society. On May 22, members of the historical society and Buckley’s descendants will gather at the cemetery where a new marker and headstone will be unveiled, bringing closure to a 98-year journey.
