Boston police seized a mother lode of fake goods Tuesday in a raid in Jamaica Plain that resulted in two arrests.

Boston police said officers raided the popular Jamaica Plain clothing store, Super Mario, and seized so many items -- including more than 600 pairs of sneakers -- that it filled an entire police holding cell. Name brands included The North Face, Gucci, Ed Hardy and Chanel.

"He knew what he was doing was wrong and he was very cooperative when we went in and seized everything. To him, it was just financial, it was his business," Boston police Detective John Cronin said.

Police said Super Mario is the latest local retailer to be busted. In this case, a private investigator hired by Nike discovered the counterfeits.

All of the items may be knock-offs, but in some cases, the prices are close to authentic. For example, a North Face parka was being sold for $279.

"They're getting shafted twice. You think you're paying for an original, but it's not -- and it's not cheap," Boston police Sgt. Detective Kim Gaddy said.

Some customers said they know what they're paying for, and while they'd rather buy the authentic product, that's not always an option.

"There's economic problems out here and people have problems buying real sneakers. But I'm not a 'knock off' person, just so you know, but the reality is, people need sneakers," said Don Jeffs, a customer.

Companies like Nike said knock-offs are illegal and cut into their profits.
