BOSTON -- A US Airways plane narrowly averted a collision with a construction vehicle at Logan Airport Thursday morning, an airport official said.
The vehicle drove onto an airport runway just as the plane was taking off.
US Airways Flight 27 was taking off for Phoenix just after 6:30 a.m., when the construction vehicle crossed Runway 15R."There is a car on the runway," the pilot told the Logan Airport control tower. "We are finding that out as we speak," was the response.
The plane "came within seconds of hitting the truck," said airport spokesman Phil Orlandella. There were 84 passengers and five crew members on board, a spokesman for US Airways said. The truck, which is owned by HNTB Inc., was on a taxiway near the runway when the driver crossed over the runway and came close to the Airbus 320.
Standard procedure is for the driver to stop and ask for permission to cross. The driver did not do that, according to FAA spokesman Jim Peters. An alarm then went off in the control tower where people saw the truck cross and the aircraft pass it.The pilot of the plane reported the runway incursion, but continued the flight without further incident and landed safely in Phoenix."The (driver) has been suspended pending an internal investigation," said Sara J. Prem, HNTB Public Relations Manager."This is a serious incident that we're going to be investigating," said Peters.Orlandella said officials don't believe alcohol was involved, but are investigating other factors, including driver cell phone use.Massport has suspended all construction projects near runways while the incident is investigated, CEO Thomas Kinton said.
