FALL RIVER, Mass. -- Fall River Mayor Robert Correia's tour of his city with the state's top transportation official was interrupted Friday when the mayor ran a stop sign and crashed into the path of an oncoming car, Fall River police said.

Police cited Correia for failing to stop and issued a ticket for $100.

The mayor was driving state Secretary of Transportation James A. Aloisi Jr., along with state Sen. Joan Menard, and Rep. Michael Rodrigues, in his 2003 Lexus to meet a news reporter when the crash occurred.

The front driver's side of his car was struck by a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Kyra Cabral.

Cabral told police that she and a passenger were traveling northbound on Davol Street when the mayor ran through the stop sign. She told police she was not able to stop and the two cars collided.

The mayor told police that he had stopped and was edging his car out to make a turn.

"He did not see Ms. Cabral's car," said Ines Leite, Correia's spokeswoman, who said the mayor believed the accident was not his fault.

Fall River police cited Massachusetts law in citing the mayor as responsible for the crash. No one was injured.
