WALPOLE, Mass. -- After resigning as head football coach and athletic director at Walpole High School earlier this week, former New England Patriot Daniel Villa has been charged by Walpole Police with three counts of child rape.WATCH: High School Coach Faces Child Rape ChargesThe 44-year-old coach, who led the school to a championship victory weeks ago, faces three counts of rape of a child over 14 and three counts of enticing a minor, according to a statement from Walpole police. Officials said a warrant for Villa’s arrest was issued on Friday. He turned himself into police in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday.Villa's lawyers, Sally & Fitch LLP, released a statement on Saturday reading, "Our client, Danny Villa, has turned himself in to the Tucson Police Department in Arizona this evening. On Friday, December 26 we informed the Walpole Police Department that Mr. Villa would turn himself in at 9 a.m. on Monday, December 29, on his return from Arizona. On learning this afternoon that Arizona police were nevertheless seeking to arrest him on the Massachusetts charges, Mr. Villa turned himself in to the local authorities. We expect that Mr. Villa will waive extradition in an Arizona court on Monday and will return to Massachusetts voluntarily to face the charges against him. Mr. Villa intends to plead not guilty at his arraignment in Massachusetts."School Superintendent Lincoln Lynch was first notified of a “credible parent complaint” against Villa on Monday night, according to the statement. Lynch contacted Walpole police and a criminal investigation was launched into the complaint.Villa was placed on paid administrative leave Tuesday morning and chose to resign his position later that day, citing family concerns.“This is something I had to do right now,” Villa told the Boston Herald earlier this week. “I have to focus on my family right now. As I tell all my Walpole players, family comes first and I have to devote 100 percent of my attention to my family right now.”Villa led one of the most successful high school football programs in Massachusetts, capping an undefeated season with a championship this month. He played in the NFL for 12 seasons, including six with the Patriots.Two weeks ago, Villa was also named Coach Of The Year by the Patriots All Access television program on Channel 5.
