Seven residents were injured, including one critically, Boston fire officials said. All seven were taken to Boston area hospitals.

The fire on Monsignor Jacobbe Road in East Boston broke out just after 7 a.m. in a third-floor apartment. Smoke filled the third, fourth and fifth stories of the building and some residents were taken out of the building over ladders, firefighters said.

Elderly residents with blankets stood outside the building on the street, while firefighters swept the building to be sure everyone got out.

The fire was brought under control within an hour. The cause of the fire is believe to be accidental.

The Red Cross is providing shelter for the displaced residents.
