A pedestrian was hit by a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Green Line trolley about 9:20 a.m. Monday in Brighton, MBTA officials said.

Student Hit By Trolley

The unidentified 21-year-old male Boston College student from Sudbury was hit and seriously injured near Lake Street and Commonwealth Avenue by an inbound trolley.

"A trespasser walked in front of an inbound Green Line trolley. The trolley operator made several attempts to get his attention by blowing the horn. Witnesses told transit police he was wearing earphones, so those attempts to get his attention failed. He was struck by the trolley," said MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo.

He was conscious and talking when emergency crews arrived at the scene. He was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital.

"He left here with head and leg injuries and facial lacerations," Pesaturo said.

Both the pedestrian and the driver were going to be taken to the hospital, MBTA officials said, where the driver was to undergo routine drug and alcohol tests.

Pesaturo said the incident happened in an area closed to pedestrians.

"There are Jersey barriers at that end. He obviously walked around those. We do have designated crossing areas for pedestrians, which we encourage people to use because, you can see what happens when you don’t use one of the designated crossing areas," Pesaturo said.

Transit police said riders would be bused between the Washington Street and Boston College stations while they investigated the incident.
