"Even animals should not have been in that type of situation," said Boston firefighter Fred Ellis Jr. "Trash, defecation, urination, open cans of food, rat droppings."

Four people, including a 5-year-old girl, were taken to the hospital after being sickened by carbon monoxide fumes.

"They had to remove three adults and one child. They found the child wandering with the mother, and she was unclothed. She was in her mother's windbreaker. There were rodents in the building, a dog wandering around, cobwebs, feces -- it was just a total mess," said Boston Fire District Chief Joseph Casper.

The incident happened at 112 Tudor St. in South Boston Friday morning.

According to NSTAR, there was an underground failure at the address. Smoke from the failed cable entered the home, making the people sick.

The four people remained hospitalized Friday evening.
